While the Inn draws a diverse crowd to the interesting events it holds throughout the year, it is particularly family friendly. A kids camp is open during peak periods with cool nature activities such as fishing, canoeing, kayaking, shrimping, crabbing and evening bonfires. There is no need for TV, DS Nintendos or Gameboys at this place!

Attention horse lovers: a newly built 173-acre equestrian center complete with three barns, indoor arena, and cross country course is waiting for you.

Here is a report from my favorite travelers who were at the Inn last weekend:

The Inn is a short, direct flight from New York to Savannah, GA, where we rented a car for a pleasant 25-minute drive to the Inn.

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff is rated the #1 US resort because it is perfect in every way. We have traveled near and far, but nowhere in the world are you treated as graciously as you are in the south. Porching, a southern custom where everyone gathers for conversation on the porch, is a daily event. If you love nature, golf, tennis, fishing, boating, biking, spa stuff, their facilities are world class.

Our spacious clapboard cottage was beautifully decorated, and equipped with every amenity known to man; including a super-sized steam shower and a roaring fire at the flip of a switch.  The deep, screened-in porch overlooking a serene lagoon was my favorite spot to read, nap and observe nature at its best. Our own golf cart and bicycles were conveniently parked out front so getting around the 20-thousand-acre property was always a fun ride.

Our timing was lucky enough to attend Palmetto Bluff’s Ultimate weekend event (3rd year). Coastal Living magazine and celebrity Food Network chef Tyler Florence did an extraordinary job hosting a culinary festival featuring top chefs from the best restaurants in the low country. We especially enjoyed the chef and farmer panel discussion in the wine cellar the first evening, followed by a casual house party tasting southern dishes prepared and served by the chefs themselves, then relaxing around roaring fire pits, roasting smores for dessert, mingling with the chefs and other guests, while listening to country music live. Lots of great wine tasting, too.

The oyster roast one night was a first for us. Fresh oysters roasted on an open firepit, then shoveled onto a wooden table for everyone to grab and shuck until your heart’s content.

Tyler Florence gave us some good cooking tips and demonstrated how to make a complete Thanksgiving dinner in 40 minutes. Never again will I roast a whole bird for 3 hours and hope it comes out juicy. Another tip: for mashed potatoes cook them in milk and cream, no water necessary.

What I loved: Everything!

Don’t Miss: The 4-mile entrance road lined on both sides with moss-draped trees. Southern-fried chicken (our vote for #1 dish in America).

What I didn’t love:  Can’t think of a thing.

I love that low country area around the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, and that fried chicken reminds me why I love to travel in SC. The Myrtle Beach family resorts can also be great, especially for the kids, but that low country area is also a must see!
